Fencing Community Contributions
Outside of competing, I am actively involved in the fencing community through refereeing and coaching. These experiences have allowed me to contribute in different ways while also deepening my understanding of the sport. Being involved off the strip has helped me develop a broader perspective on fencing.
Junior Coaching
At local tournaments, I enjoy coaching younger kids from my club. I have to be able to understand what is happening during the bout in order to be able to give helpful suggestions. As a fencer, this has helped my ability to recognize patterns, timing, and decision-making in real time. It has made me more aware of adjustments I can make during bouts and more intentional in how I approach different situations on the strip.
Refereeing
I have been refereeing since I was in Y12 and currently have an R1 rating in epee. Being on the strip as a referee has allowed me to view fencing from a different perspective. Constantly watching others fence when I ref has helped me develop a sense of timing, distance, and how actions are built in real time. It has also pushed me to stay calm and confident while making decisions in tense situations.
Volunteering
Beyond the strip, my commitment to community service reflects the discipline and leadership I bring to fencing. Volunteering has shaped my character, teaching me the value of giving back and working within diverse teams to achieve meaningful goals.
Ronald McDonald House
I am a regular volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. I host regular Caring Card Drives where I gather inspiring messages to send to critically ill children and their families.
Union Station Homeless Services
I provide tutoring and art teaching to children currently living in the Pasadena Family Center. During a time of uncertainty and discomfort, I hope that I can provide a sense of stability and normalcy.
My Family
As the oldest of five siblings, I’ve developed a strong sense of responsibility and leadership that extends beyond fencing. With first-generation immigrant parents from China, I often help translate and manage communication, as well as support my younger siblings with school and daily responsibilities. Balancing this with academics and fencing has strengthened my discipline, time management, and ability to stay accountable, all of which carry directly into how I train and compete.
